What is "stinking thinking?"
"Stinking thinking" is simply choosing to spend time with thoughts that cause you pain. To feed adverse inner-thoughts with your attention is to increase your inner pain. To keep feeding a thought after it has savagely attacked you is insane. Yet, some of us seem to be addicted to inner-pain until the pain becomes so great we wake up.
Adverse thoughts are like magnets attracting more adverse thoughts in the same way lions are attracted to the kill. Only in this case the "kill" is you.
Thought management is such a critical skill to develop. In fact, I wrote a song at the request of Motivational Speaker Zig Ziglar on stinking thinking, as it was a popular topic for him, to which most canrelate. (See lyrics below)
How can I stop thinking adverse thoughts?
It's not the thought that comes into your mind that cause the problem. It's the thought you choose to believe. To stop feeding adverse thoughts is to stop giving them the food they need to survive and thrive - your attention. When your attention is no longer available to them, they will move on to a weaker victim to attack.

"If it as all about cause and effect: Thoughts cause feelings, feelings cause behavior, and behaviors cause results...then it would be good to detect the thoughts that are not in harmony with the effects (results) I desire."

STINKING THINKING
I was feeling bad, looking bad, had no dough.
I thought life had dealt me an awful blow,
and I complained to a buddy that I was all through.
He said, "You know it wasn't too long ago,
I was poorer than you, with less to show.
Then I got a tip, and I'd like to pass it on to you."

He said, "Write down what you want.
Release those things that you don't,
and you'll get everything that stinking thinking kept from you.
So, I put wise thoughts in my mind.
I write 'em on paper 10 to 15 times,
and I repeat 'em out loud, and I look in the mirror while I do. Oh, I like that!

Aw, that's way too simple, most people say.
There's got to be a harder, complicated way.
